The "Wild Waters" of Untertal

Arrival via B 320 towards Schladming - exit Schladming following signs for Rohrmoos/Untertal - Access via a good-quality toll road as far as Gasthof Riesachfall (trail head).

Total time on trail: ca. 3 hours (hike up through the gorge, descent via the forest path)

Wild Waters alpine trail allows you to discover Riesach waterfall, which drops a total of 140 meters in 2 stages to the valley below. This is actually the highest waterfall in Styria.

After winding your way up a steep, wide path with stairs in parts, you will reach the alpine trail in about 30 minutes. The trail extends out through a canyon - which is crossed by means of a 50 meters-high suspension footbridge - alongside the flowing waters of the Riesachbach. Hikers experience the primal power of the water in truly impressive fashion. In springtime, especially, after the snow-melt, you are treated to a magnificent natural spectacle. Though the trail does demand surefootedness and a head for heights - yet it is still suitable for, and especially popular with children.

In contrast, the hike down the forestry road can be handled by anyone. This brings you to the Obere Gfölleralm, which can also be readily reached without ever having to tackle the alpine trail. A natural spectacle for the whole family - though please note, the hike up via the  "Höllsteig" trail is not suitable for dogs.
